Introduction
Tyo Feri Farkala? (त्यो फेरि फर्कला ?, "Will He Return Again?") is a psychological story (मनोवैज्ञानिक कथा) by Bhawani Bhikshu (भवानी भिक्षु), one of the masters of psychological fiction in Nepali literature. Through its heroine Sani, the story gives a moving portrait of a woman's inner world: the unspoken attraction, suppressed desire and lifelong waiting hidden beneath an ordinary life.
Summary
Sani lives with her mother, who keeps a wayside lodging for travellers. One evening a young traveller arrives and asks whether he can stay the night. When her mother gives permission, Sani is strangely delighted. She busies herself eagerly arranging the guest's stay, and without ever saying a word, she is drawn to him. That night, after the traveller falls asleep, Sani drifts into fantasies about him. She lights a lamp and finds herself, almost unknowingly, at the place where he sleeps, then trembles with fear that her mother or the guest might discover her. The thought that he must surely have a wife somewhere leaves her silent and still. In the morning the traveller departs, as travellers do.
For fifteen days Sani waits in high excitement, but the traveller does not return. In time she is married and goes to her husband's house, yet not for one moment can she forget the stranger of that single night. She fulfils every duty of family life and gives her home its full share of love, but a secret hope, that he might come again and take her away, never leaves her. After her mother's death she returns to her childhood home and takes up her mother's trade, keeping the lodging where he had once stayed.
Then one day, the same traveller suddenly appears again, asking for a night's shelter. Sani's lifelong wait seems answered: until, in conversation, he casually remarks: "Why, you have grown old!" Still thinking of herself as the young woman of that distant night, Sani is jolted into reality. When morning comes, the traveller walks away exactly as before. Only then does she understand that he had never felt any love or longing for her at all: the waiting had been hers alone. With that realization, Sani's long wait ends, leaving her weary, drained and quietly broken.
Theme
The story explores female psychology and suppressed desire: the conflict between the conscious and the subconscious mind, the thirst of an unfulfilled one-sided love, and the tragedy of a life spent waiting for someone who never even noticed. It also honours the greatness of a woman's love: without woman's affection, the story suggests, this vast world would be nothing but dry, lifeless wood.
