लौ आयो ताजा खबर (लघु नाटक)
Introduction
Lau Aayo Taja Khabar (लौ आयो ताजा खबर, "Here Comes the Fresh News!") is a short play (लघु नाटक) by Surendra Nakarmi (सुरेन्द्र नकर्मी). Set in a multilingual city neighbourhood (its dialogues coloured by Sherpa, Newari and Hindi) the play uses eight stage characters to dramatize one of urban society's most painful problems: drug addiction among the young.
Summary
The play takes its title from the street cry of a newspaper boy hawking the day's paper: "Here comes the fresh news!" The news that shakes the neighbourhood is grim: the body of an unidentified young man has been found. One by one, worried relatives begin to arrive, each fearing the worst: a son who has been missing from home for two days might be the young man in the newspaper. Around this fear gather the play's characters (Dahri Baba, Narahari, Dindayal, Dorje, Tuyumai, Salim, Kumar's father and the newspaper boy) a cross-section of the city's many communities.
The most moving moment belongs to Kumar's father, who openly confesses his own failures as a parent. He never sat with his son to talk about his studies; never asked about his friends; never noticed where he went or what he did; gave him all the money he asked for without ever wondering how it was spent: too busy running between business and meetings to see his own child slipping into drug addiction. His confession turns private grief into public lesson: a dutiful guardian is one who fulfils their responsibility towards their children.
The play then moves from mourning to action. Since the root of addiction cannot be pulled out by one person alone, the neighbours resolve to launch a collective campaign to uproot drug abuse and cleanse society of its distortions. "If the country is not built, none of us become anything," they declare: happiness comes only from standing together in one another's joys and sorrows. The play closes with a charge to the press as well: newspapers will truly deserve the cry "fresh news" only when they carry clean, awareness-raising news: the news of a young generation freed from addiction and devoted to building the nation.
Theme
The play exposes drug addiction as a poison that destroys individuals, families, society and nation alike. Its remedies are parental duty, collective social campaigning and responsible journalism, for the young are tomorrow's nation-builders, and saving them from addiction is everyone's shared responsibility.
